The Product Shelf Challenge

When Simone decided to start her three-month mini braid challenge, she promised herself one thing:

She was not buying every product TikTok recommended.

That promise lasted exactly six days.

By the second week, her bathroom shelf looked like a tiny beauty supply store.

Spray bottles lined the counter beside jars of whipped butter, leave-in conditioners, scalp serums, deep conditioners, mousse, oils, and shampoos with words like hydrating, restoring, and ultra moisture printed across the labels.

Her older sister Danielle walked into the bathroom, stared at the shelf, and blinked slowly.

“Are you doing your hair,” she asked, “or opening a laboratory?”

Simone ignored her.

Because honestly?

The products were part of the fun.

Every other night became a full routine.

First came her moisture mix.

Simone filled a large spray bottle with water, aloe vera juice, and a few pumps of leave-in conditioner. Sometimes she added rose water because she loved how fresh it smelled. She shook the bottle dramatically before spraying her mini braids section by section.

The mist cooled her scalp instantly.

At first, Simone used to spray only the outside of her braids, but after researching protective styles, she realized the moisture needed to reach the actual hair hidden underneath.

So now she squeezed each braid gently after spraying to help the moisture absorb all the way through.

Then came the leave-in conditioner.

Not too much.

She learned that heavy products sitting inside mini braids too long caused buildup, flakes, and sticky braids that never fully dried.

After leave-in came oil.

Usually jojoba oil or grapeseed oil because they felt lightweight instead of greasy. Simone rubbed a little between her hands and focused mostly on her ends.

“Seal the moisture,” she whispered to herself like a ritual.

One Friday night, her best friend Kayla came over carrying two shopping bags full of products.

Simone stared. “Why do you have that much stuff?”

Kayla stared back. “Why do you have that much stuff?”

Fair point.

The girls spent the next hour sitting cross-legged on the floor comparing products like scientists.

“This deep conditioner smells like cupcakes.”

“This scalp serum tingles.”

“Why is this oil seventy dollars?!”

“Girl, put that back.”

Soon, product testing became part of the challenge itself.

Some things worked immediately.

Some definitely did not.

One mousse made Simone’s braids crunchy.

Another leave-in left white flakes along her parts.

One heavy butter sat on top of her hair so thickly that her braids looked shiny for three straight days.

Danielle laughed every time Simone complained.

“You wanted the healthy hair journey.”

“I didn’t know the journey included chemistry.”

Still, Simone kept learning.

By the second month, she understood her hair better than ever.

Hydration mattered more than heavy oils.

Lightweight layers worked best.

Too much product caused buildup.

Clean scalp care was just as important as moisture.

Wash days became serious business.

Simone mixed shampoo with warm water inside an applicator bottle before carefully applying it between her braid parts. The diluted shampoo spread more easily across her scalp without leaving thick patches trapped between the braids.

Then came rinsing.

The longest part.

She stood under the shower lifting sections of braids one at a time, squeezing them repeatedly until the water ran clear.

If she rushed, leftover shampoo made her scalp itch later.

If she used too much conditioner, her braids took forever to dry.

Everything became about balance.

After shampooing, she used a lightweight hair mask with honey and avocado oil. She smoothed it gently over her braids and focused extra attention on her roots and ends before rinsing thoroughly.

Very thoroughly.

Because once, after leaving too much product behind, her scalp felt sticky for nearly a week.

Never again.

After every wash came her favorite step:

Re-moisturizing.

Water first.

Then leave-in conditioner.

Then oil.

Always.

By month three, Simone’s mini braids looked older, puffier, and frizzier—but underneath them, her hair felt stronger than it had in years.

Her scalp stayed healthier because she kept it clean consistently. Her ends stayed soft because she moisturized every other day faithfully. Even her shedding seemed easier to manage because her hair stayed detangled inside the braids.

Then came takedown day.

Simone spread towels across her bed and lined up all her favorite products beside her like teammates preparing for a championship game.

Spray bottle.

Conditioner.

Detangling brush.

Hair clips.

Oil.

Snacks.

Movies.

She unraveled the first braid slowly.

Then paused.

Hair covered her fingers.

“Oh no.”

Danielle looked over calmly from the doorway. “That’s shedding.”

“But it looks like so much!”

“You’ve had your hair braided for three months. Those shed strands were trapped.”

Simone relaxed slightly and continued.

Each section got sprayed with water first, then coated lightly with conditioner before she carefully finger-detangled from ends to roots.

Hours later, after washing and deep conditioning her loose hair one final time, Simone stood in front of the mirror completely speechless.

Her curls looked thick.

Moisturized.

Healthy.

Longer too.

Not because one miracle product transformed her hair overnight.

But because she finally learned how to use products correctly.

Consistency mattered more than hype.

Moisture mattered more than shine.

Clean hair mattered more than piling on heavy products.

And healthy hair wasn’t built from buying everything on the shelf.

It was built from patience, routines, and learning what actually worked for her hair.
