Maya stood in front of the mirror, gently touching her curls. They were soft, full, and beautiful, reaching toward the sky like little spirals of sunshine.
For years, she had heard people say that straight hair was prettier. Sometimes she wondered if her natural hair was “too big,” “too wild,” or simply different.
One morning, her grandmother watched Maya getting ready for school. She smiled and said, “Baby, your curls carry a story. They come from women who were strong, creative, and proud. Never be ashamed of the crown growing from your head.”
Maya looked at herself again. She saw more than curls. She saw coils, kinks, waves, and textures that made her uniquely herself. She saw the beauty of Black women who had worn their natural hair proudly in countless styles—afros, twists, braids, locs, puffs, and curls.
Maya volvió a mirarse.
At school, a little girl asked, “Why does your hair look like that?”
Maya smiled.
“Because this is how my hair grows,” she answered. “And I love it.”
“Y me encanta”.
That afternoon, Maya walked home with her head held high. The wind danced through her curls, and for the first time, she didn't try to make them smaller.
She realized that beauty did not have one shape, one texture, or one definition.
Her curls were not something to hide.
Her curls were something to celebrate.
And as the sun shone on her beautiful Black hair, Maya whispered to herself:
“My hair is my crown. My curls are my story. My beauty is mine.”
