Saturday morning was wash day, and Nia knew exactly what that meant. She gathered her favorite products, a wide-tooth comb, a soft towel, and a bottle of oil.

Before stepping into the shower, Nia began her favorite part of the routine: pre-pooing.

Pre-pooing meant applying an oil, conditioner, or moisturizing treatment to her hair before shampooing. Her grandmother had taught her that tightly curled and coily hair could become especially dry because its natural oils had a harder time traveling from the scalp down the bends and curves of each strand.
